Description of From Victim to Victory: Early on a Saturday morning, Regina Lane drove to her parking space in downtown Winston-Salem, got out of her car, and crossed the street to go into the Integon Office Building to work. Before she could step through the door, she was accosted, a gun was shoved into her side, and she was forced back into her car. What happened next was an atrocity that has haunted her, and perplexed investigators and the people of Winston-Salem for over twenty years. She became known as The Integon Victim of Winston-Salem. Now, finally, the public will know the entire story and the intimate details of her kidnapping, rape, assault, stabbing and near death as she fought her attacker, and later, helped bring him to justice. At the same time she provided evidence to exonerate Darryl Hunt for the murder of Deborah Sykes, and finally setting him free from prison and setting herself free from the past.
From Victim to Victory by Regina Lane and Dr. Linda F. Felker is available from Second Wind Publishing. Recently, Investigation Discovery Channel scheduled a show to feature this thirty-year old case on an the episode “On Her Own” of the series Cold Blood.
In 1982, Winston-Salem, N.C., is a city divided by race, and when a young white copy editor is raped and stabbed to death, the atmosphere is tense. Detectives charge a black 19-year-old Darryl Hunt with the brutal crime and despite little physical evidence linking him to Deborah Skykes’ murder, a mostly white jury finds him guilty and sentences him to life in prison. But this tale of murder, race and justice in the American South spans 20 years before modern forensic science comes to the rescue and Sykes’ true killer finally faces justice once and for all.
On Friday, April 20, 2012 from 6:00 to 7:30, Barnhill’s in Winston-Salem will be hosting a release party for Regina Lane and Dr. Linda F. Felker, authors of From Victim to Victory. If you are in the area, be sure to stop by for this special event.
